Addiction is the seeking to fill an emptiness within oneself.
That feeling of emptiness rises from the need of the soul to be recognized and fed. The overuse of alcohol or drugs or sex or food gives one the temporary sense that the emptiness is sated…that the need is fulfilled. But, alas, these things (and countless others) being only a superficial, temporary, transient satiation. There is no actual satisfaction – Thus, the need to use more and more and again and again.
Ignoring the actual need, the actual cause of the emptiness in this way takes a dangerous toll on the body – in two ways. Not only does the body react negatively to overuse of any substance or habit or activity, it continues to crave what is actually lacking and expands this neediness into the organs and muscles and pores. The entire body suffers.
So. What is missing? What is craved? Simply, connection to Oneness. There is no need to ‘add’ anything to One for One is totality and infinite and complete in and of itself.
It is the failure to allow One to thrive within one’s soul that creates all fear and all need. Any addict that has successfully lost the need for substances (or food or whatever) will report that what has taken the place of this need is the belief that there is a greatness around and among that satisfies all needs and desires. Once this understanding of a greater source is reached, there is no more need for a physical replacement. It can’t be replaced.
